balinese performance
cultural shows
The Cultural Performances offer an opportunity to experience the spirit of Bali and learn a little bit more about the island's rich culture and traditional dances, accompanied by the Gamelan Orchestra dressed in dazzling silk sarongs.
The show takes place on Tuesdays and Saturdays, and begins on a stage flanked by brightly coloured temple parasols, and bamboo poles festooned with natural decorations, overhanging a traditional Balinese gateway.
The Gamelan Orchestra creates a mystical ambience as it provides the accompaniment to the story of the Ramayana, a Hindu epic. The characters in magnificent costumes of gold, greens, yellows and reds, masks, and startling make-up, enact the battle between Rama and the evil king Rawana for the prize of the beautiful princess. The performance is a musical blending of classical dance movements and the hilarious comedy of monkeys and clowns. Look out for the wise Garuda and the funny white monkey. The Ramayana performance is alternated with the famous Legong Dance, the make-up and costumes are stunning, and you will be close enough to the stage to witness the striking movement of the dancers' apparently double-jointed limbs, and expressive, flickering eyes.
Children love these shows and will hang on to the stage so that they can get a good view. Afterwards those who dare will be invited to try a little bit of Balinese dancing or pose for photographs with the cast.
